New Leeds United manager Darko Milanic has revealed it was the club's sporting director Nicola Salerno who put him forward for the post at Elland Road.

Milanic has penned a two-year deal with the Championship side and succeeds David Hockaday at the Yorkshire giants, arriving from Austrian club Sturm Graz.

It has been speculated that Milanic's agent, who also represents midfielder Zan Benedicic, a Leeds United summer signing, spoke to the club's owner Massimo Cellino to put forward his client.

But Milanic believes Salerno was aware of his work and recommended him to Cellino.

"I think Nicola Salerno, the sport director, told him [Cellino] about me, about my history as a head coach", the Slovenian told LUTV.

"We talked a little bit about Leeds United, about the English style of football, about the things to do here in Leeds. It was extremely interesting", he added, referring to his first meeting with Cellino.

"I think that I am here to improve the team, to make the team better", Milanic said.

Milanic will be presented to the media as Leeds' new boss at a press conference tomorrow morning.

The Slovenian has already taken training with his new players.
