Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Rickie Lambert will start in his side’s League Cup contest against Middlesbrough tonight.

The England international, who joined the Reds from Southampton in the summer, is yet to start a game for his new employers.

Lambert’s involvement with Liverpool has thus far been limited to four substitute appearances worth 63 minutes of action in total.

However Rodgers, who feels the 32-year-old makes an impact as a substitute, is hopeful about the striker finding the back of the net against Middlesbrough at Anfield.

"Rickie's been training very, very well", the manager told his club's site.

"He came in during pre-season and he's been getting himself fit. He played in a lot of the games [in pre-season]. He got himself to a good level of fitness and this will be a game that he will start in.

"He's come off the bench and made an impact for us. He's a wonderful player, a great technician and he makes it really, really difficult for defenders.

"I know he's really looking forward to tomorrow [Tuesday] night and hopefully he can get a goal on his first start."

Lambert, a late bloomer, progressed through the lower leagues of English football and has scored 28 Premier League goals in his past two seasons in the top flight with Southampton.

The forward, whose contract with Liverpool runs until 2016, represented the Three Lions at the 2014 World Cup.
