Argentina international goalkeeper Sergio Romero insists that it is simply untrue to say that he turned down the chance to join Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

The Argentine spent the last season on loan to Monaco from Sampdoria, but made only nine appearances for the Ligue 1 club.

He played a pivotal role in Argentina’s run to the final in the World Cup and returned to Sampdoria this summer, though he was expected to leave in the transfer window.

Rumours were rife in the last days of the summer transfer window that Romero refused an offer to join Manchester United. However, the goalkeeper has comprehensively such speculation.

He added that it would have been crazy on his part if he passed on an opportunity to join the English giants.

“Many lies were told, like the one that I refused a transfer to Manchester United”, Romero told Radio Nacional.

“That would have been a crazy thing [for me to do].”

The Argentine is yet to make an appearance for Sampdoria this season.

But Romero insists that he is happy at Sampdoria and is eager to play more often than sit on the bench. However, he cannot rule out a move in the January transfer window if his situation does not change.

“I am happy at Sampdoria but I want to play more rather than sit on the bench.

“A goodbye in January remains a possibility.”
