Louis van Gaal is bending the ear of his former assistant at Bayern Munich to help with his Manchester United recruitment policy.

Van Gaal is under intense pressure to strengthen the Red Devils' fragile defence when the transfer window swings back open in January, following a number of poor displays from his backline.

And to help, Van Gaal has tapped his former assistant at Bayern Munich, Andries Jonker, who now works as the head of Arsenal's academy.

According to German magazine Kicker, Jonker has recommended Wolfsburg defender Ricardo Rodriguez to his old boss.

Jonker worked for Wolfsburg before taking up his post with Arsenal earlier this year and saw Rodriguez's skills first hand at the Volkswagen Arena.

The Arsenal academy chief believes the Switzerland international could help Van Gaal solve Manchester United's defensive issues.

However, the Wolves are reluctant to lose Rodriguez, who is under contract at the club until 2016.

"Ricardo is a very valuable player for us and we think his development is far from complete", Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs commented.
