Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Liverpool will check on Daniel Sturridge’s fitness for their upcoming Champions League game against FC Basel on Wednesday.

The striker, who suffered a thigh injury while on England duty over the international break earlier in the month, has missed the Reds’ last five matches in all competitions.

Sturridge was tipped to return to action against Everton at the weekend, but the Merseyside derby came too soon for him.

And Rodgers, who admitted that the 25-year-old is not far away from his return, explained that the forward will be assessed before Liverpool’s trip to Switzerland.

"He wasn't really close for this game [against Everton]", the Northern Irishman told his club’s official site.
