Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester United are set to finish ahead of his old club this season in the Premier League.

Carragher, who retired from football in 2013 to take up a role as a pundit with Sky Sports, watched on as Liverpool only narrowly missed out on the title last term, eventually finishing second behind Manchester City; Manchester United could finish just seventh.

Both Liverpool and Manchester United have made a number of summer signings, giving respective managers Brendan Rodgers and Louis van Gaal an integration challenge.

And Carragher feels Liverpool having Champions League football on the agenda could allow Manchester United to edge ahead of their fierce rivals this term.

Asked who will finish higher on Sky's Monday Night Football, Carragher replied: "If Liverpool and Manchester United were both in the same situation, playing just the league games, I'd say Liverpool without a doubt."

However, taking Europe into account, he expanded: "I'd probably side just with Manchester United because they've got less games, not because they are a better side."

Both North West clubs have had a mixed start to the season, with Manchester United collecting eight points from six games to sit seventh, while Liverpool have seven points from six games and sit 14th.
