Nani feels nerves got the better of Sporting Lisbon against Chelsea this evening, after the Portuguese side went down to a 1-0 Champions League defeat at home.

The only goal of the game came through Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic in the 34th minute, a blow that was all the more difficult to bear for the home side as the Serbian is a former Benfica player.

Chelsea had a whole host of chances in the second half to extend their advantage, but could not find the clinical finish which would have made the evening's work easier.

And Nani blamed nerves for Sporting Lisbon's lacklustre display, with the club playing their first home Champions League game in nearly six years.

"In the first half we were a little bit nervous, some players were a little nervous, they misplaced a lot of passes", Nani, on loan at Sporting Lisbon from Manchester United, told Sky Sports.

"We had chances to make the last passes, to make a chance for us, but our focus was not the best.

"But in the second half we gave a very good response", he added.

The group's other game, between Schalke and NK Maribor, ended in a draw.
