Chelsea defender John Terry has saluted the Blues' 1-0 Champions League victory away at Sporting Lisbon this evening, but admitted his side were guilty of missed opportunities.

Jose Mourinho's men scored the only goal of the game, coming after the 34th minute through former Benfica player Nemanja Matic, who was booed by the Sporting Lisbon fans throughout the match.

Chelsea then had a whole host of chances to extend their lead in the second half, spurning one-on-one efforts with the goalkeeper, Filipe Luis dragging a shot-cum-cross wide, and Terry admits the side were concerned they might be undone by a sucker punch.

"Listen, they are a very good side. It's been almost ten years for them since they have been in the Champions League", Terry told Sky Sports.

"We had so many chances to kill it off, but it didn't go in", he continued.

And Terry emphasised the importance of the Blues earning three Champions League points after drawing their group stage opener with Schalke, who drew 1-1 with NK Maribor in the group's other match.

"We had to come here and win today, regardless of the other result in the group, so we put ourselves top of the group and in control again", he added.
