Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand does not believe Sir Alex Ferguson should be blamed for the Red Devils' decline over the last 18 months.

Ferguson retired in May 2013 after leading Manchester United to a 20th top flight title, being succeeded by David Moyes, who moved from Everton to take up the post.

Moyes presided over a rapid decline at Old Trafford though, being sacked even before last season ended, with Manchester United able to finish just seventh.

He was succeeded by Louis van Gaal, who is also grappling with mixed form at the club, despite spending £150m on new players in the summer.

It has been claimed Ferguson left a squad full of problems at Old Trafford when he stood down. But Ferdinand, who departed the club this summer and joined QPR, does not see how the Scot can be blamed.

"So he goes and then it all falls apart? So that's his fault? How can people say that?" Ferdinand was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I don't think the buck stops with Sir Alex Ferguson at all", the defender added.
