Tom Thorpe has praised Paddy McNair for his performance on his senior debut in Manchester United's 2-1 win over West Ham at the weekend, believing the 19-year-old made a game-saving header.

All eyes had been on Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal leading up to the game to see whether he would pick Thorpe or McNair for the Premier League clash, after injuries to key players reduced his defensive options.

It had been thought that Thorpe, who captains the club's reserves, would get the nod. But it went to McNair and Thorpe believes his defensive rival did very well indeed.

"Paddy did really well", Thorpe told MUTV.

"His header basically saved a goal so he did great."

Thorpe did not miss out entirely and managed to make his senior debut for the club after being brought off the bench in the latter stages of the game, something he is hoping to build on.

"Obviously I was delighted to get on and hopefully there is more to come", the 21-year-old said.

"I was very pleased, being a United fan and having been here from such a young age. To come through and get my first-team debut, I was very happy."
