Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Liverpool have defensive issues and has questioned the purchase of Dejan Lovren this summer.

The Reds went down to a 1-0 defeat away to Basel in the Champions League tonight, conceding from a set piece, and with a result which continues their poor start to the season.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers snapped up Lovren from Southampton for £20m in the summer, choosing to offload Daniel Agger to Brondby in favour of the Croatian.

And Keown believes Liverpool have real problems at the back at present.

"What Brendan Rodgers has done is go and buy players but it's about more than that. Dejan Lovren came in looking like he's the leader and Martin Skrtel seemed more determined to head Lovren than the ball", the former defender told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I know his philosophy is to pass the ball but you have got be tight at the back but it's their Achilles heel at the moment.

"I wasn't sure about Lovren at Southampton. He sees himself as the leader but the way Mamadou Sakho responded when he wasn't picked at the weekend suggested that wasn't handled well", Keown added.

Liverpool won their first Champions League group game, but now face a double-header against Real Madrid.
