English Championship club Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to sign free agent midfielder Houssine Kharja, but face opposition from French outfit Sochaux.

Kharja last played for Qatari club Al Arabi and is looking for pastures new in order to clock up regular first team football before the African Cup of Nations in the new year.

The Moroccan, who counts Italian side Fiorentina amongst his former clubs, has two options on the table, according to African outlet Afrik.

They are both second tier clubs, in the form of Sheffield Wednesday and Sochaux.

The 31-year-old started life in the youth ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, but made his senior breakthrough in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon.
