Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has blasted his side's performance tonight after they lost 1-0 in the Champions League against Basel.

Marco Streller scored the only goal of the match from a corner in the 52nd minute, continuing the Reds' poor record defending set pieces this season.

More worrying for the English giants was that they were second best in midfield throughout and saw Basel boss the game, restricting the opportunities they could create.

Gerrard, speaking to Sky Sports post-match, was not in the mood to pull his punches and came down hard on his team-mates, who he felt were soft and lacked hunger.

"We created a good few openings where you'd expect us to score", Gerrard said.

"But we didn't deserve anything from this game.

"We were too soft over the pitch and I think they wanted it more, which is tough to take.

"We were second best tonight against an OK team. We made it easy for them.

"We came for the win. I expected us to win, so it's very disappointing", Gerrard concluded.
