Manchester United starlet Marnick Vermijl feels he has to step up his performances this season on account of him being a senior player in the club's Under-21 side.

The Belgian defender spent last term on loan in Holland with NEC Nijmegen and has returned to Old Trafford with more experience under his belt.

And Vermijl feels he must now show where his game is when he turns out with the club's Under-21 side under Warren Joyce, as well as guiding younger players.

"It's different to when I came here", the 22-year-old told MUTV.

"I was the young one but now I'm the old one", the defender continued.

"I need to help the youngsters who come up to our squad to feel good and play well. They need to learn the game at the reserve-team level", he added.

The Belgian has played senior football this term, being part of the Manchester United side which lost 4-0 away at MK Dons in the League Cup.

Vermijl accepts the evening was hugely disappointing. However, he has vowed to learn from the experience.

"I've been in and around the squad for a couple of years now but never made the step up to be a regular.

"Milton Keynes was a shock result but we have to learn from it."
