Discussions over a new contract for Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge are ongoing, the club's manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed.

Sturridge scored 24 goals for the Reds last term and the club are keen to reward him with a new and improved contract at Anfield.

Rodgers has confirmed that talks are taking place, but can report no news on an agreement having been reached between the club and the player's representatives just yet.

Asked at a press conference about a new deal for the former Chelsea man, Rodgers replied: "There are talks ongoing with his representatives and there is no more news other than that."

Sturridge is currently sidelined with a thigh injury picked up on international duty with England.

As a result he has been ruled out of the latest Three Lions squad for Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

Liverpool meanwhile will hope to have Sturridge back as soon as possible, having hit a run of poor form.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 in the Champions League away at Basel last night.
