Manchester United director David Gill is standing to become a FIFA vice-president next year.

Gill stood down from his post as Manchester United chief executive in 2013, at the same time as the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager.

The former CEO already sits on UEFA's executive committee and is a vice-chairman of the English Football Association.

Britain is guaranteed a FIFA vice-presidency, but the selection is set to be made by the UEFA membership next year, rather than the home nations, as had formerly been the case.

The FIFA Congress will be held in May next year, at which Gill is aiming to succeed Northern Irishman Jim Boyce, who has been a FIFA vice-president since 2011.

Gill's assent is not yet assured and he could face opposition from Scottish or Welsh officials also seeking the post.
