Schalke president Clemens Tonnies has backed the club's sporting director Horst Heldt, despite the Ruhr giants' appointment of yet another coach.

Heldt has sacked Felix Magath, Huub Stevens and, recently, Jens Keller, while Ralf Rangnick stood down from the role due to exhaustion.

Now the sporting director has drafted in a new coach in the form of former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo.

And Tonnies believes that despite a number of managerial failures on his watch, Heldt should stay in his post, especially as he attracted Di Matteo to the club.

"He's got my full backing", the president explained to Sport Bild.

"He was looking for a fantastic coach and he got one. It is all down to him and he did a great job", Tonnies added.

Di Matteo's last job as was at Chelsea, where he guided the Blues to Champions League and FA Cup success in 2012, before being sacked later that year following a 3-0 defeat to Juventus.

The former Italy international also counts MK Dons and West Brom amongst his former managerial appointments.
