Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has revealed that it was not an easy decision for him to leave Real Madrid.

The Spaniard joined the German champions from Los Blancos just three days before the closure of the summer transfer window after spending five seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alonso amassed 236 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid, scoring six times and helped the club to win one La Liga title, one Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, one Spanish Super Cup and two Copa del Reys.

And the 32-year-old, who admitted that it may have been his last opportunity to swap one European heavyweight for another, thanked Real Madrid for letting him move to the Allianz Arena.

“It wasn’t an easy decision. It would never be easy to leave Madrid, because they are a top club”, he told reporters in an interview day at the Allianz Arena.

“But I felt it was the right time. I had the chance to go to another top club in another league. It was maybe the last time to experience something new.

“That’s why I took a few days to make up my mind and I talked about it with Madrid, who were very understanding.

“I’ll always be very thankful to the club. Maybe the decision came late, but that’s how it was.”

Alonso, who signed a two-year deal with Bayern Munich, has already impressed during his eight appearances for his new employers.
