Patrick van Aanholt has credited the whole Sunderland team for their impressive defensive showing over the last few weeks.

The Black Cats have conceded just one goal in their last three league fixtures and have the second best defensive record in the league after Southampton

After a not so impressive start to the season, Sunderland are slowly climbing up the league table on the basis of their defensive strength and the Dutch full-back feels that it is just not their defence that should take the credit for their performances.

"It's not just the defence, defending starts with the strikers”, the 24-year-old told BBC Newcastle.

"It's the whole team that is doing very well, we're hard to beat."

Van Aanholt also praised the approach of assistant coach Mauricio Taricco for his tireless work with the Sunderland defenders on the training pitch.

"Every training session we're working, he's giving me comments", the full-back added.

"I'm trying to work hard and it's nice to have someone to help me learn – it's nice."

Sunderland are currently 13th in the Premier League table on eight points and will take a trip to Southampton this Saturday.
