AC Milan are eyeing a deal for German World Cup winner Sami Khedira from Real Madrid, with the club's officials set to hold a high-level summit to discuss a potential bid.

Khedira has only one year left on his contract with the European champions and has so far refused to sign a new deal at the Bernabeu.

With his contractual situation, the 28-year-old will be a hot property in the winter transfer window, when he will be free to sign a pre-contract with any club.

Though Arsene Wenger said yesterday that a defender is a priority in January, Arsenal are maintaining steady interest in the midfield general.

However, the Gunners will face stiff competition from AC Milan, who are ready to enter the race for Khedira.

Filippo Inzaghi wants a dominant presence in Milan’s midfield and has made Khedira a priority transfer target, scheduling a summit meeting with the club officials, according to Tuttosport.

However, Khedira’s wage demands are set to be a stumbling block for Milan. The Rossoneri will find it difficult to compete with Arsenal’s financial power in the chase to sign the German.

The 28-year-old has made 146 appearances for Los Blancos and has earned 50 caps for his national team.
