Celtic manager Ronny Deila has refused to give any clear indication on Virgil van Dijk’s future at the club.

Van Dijk joined Celtic last summer and is one of the cornerstones of Deila’s side, who are struggling to stamp their dominance in Scotland this season.

Arsene Wenger indicated yesterday that Arsenal will try to buy a defender in January and Van Dijk is believed to be one of his targets.

The Gunners did enquire about the Dutch defender towards the fag end of the summer transfer window, but Celtic refused to enter into negotiations.

Now Deila has refused to comment on the rumours of Arsenal moving for Van Dijk, but said that the club are keen to hold on to their best players.

“There is still some time left before the transfer market opens and such rumours are expected”, the Norwegian was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.

“But we want to keep our best players and that is our goal. The club are thinking on the same lines and we are in control of the situation.”

Deila refused to clearly state that Van Dijk is not for sale, but indicated that Celtic will also try to bring in players in January.

“You never know what kind of bids we will receive but we are thinking more in the terms of attracting players to Celtic.

“We are also interested in players from other clubs.”

Van Dijk has made 62 appearances for Celtic and played a crucial role in the Bhoys retaining their league title last season.
