Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard feels that Mario Balotelli must keep plugging away to get in the goalscoring groove for the Reds.

Balotelli started for Liverpool in their 3-2 win away at QPR earlier today, but looked lacklustre throughout and missed a number of chances, one a guilt-edged opportunity with an open goal, blasting it well over the bar.

The Italian has still not scored in the Premier League for Liverpool, while his only goal for the club came in the Champions League against Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets Razgrad.

Gerrard has promised that Balotelli will receive chances to score and has told the Italian to keep working hard.

"He's got to keep working hard and not get himself down", Gerrard told the BBC.

"Playing around players like [Philippe] Coutinho, [Raheem] Sterling and [Jordan] Henderson he will get chances."

Liverpool will hope Balotelli can step up to the plate on Wednesday night when Real Madrid provide the opposition for the Reds in the Champions League.
