Former England captain Alan Shearer believes that Liverpool look worse defensively this season than they did last season, despite manager Brendan Rodgers spending over £100m in the summer transfer window.

The Reds conceded twice against bottom club QPR in a 3-2 Premier League win yesterday, a match which saw the R's score two own goals.

Liverpool have seen their defensive displays criticised all season long and Shearer feels Rodgers has taken the defence backwards, making a backline which already looked vulnerable last term even worse.

"Liverpool struggled defensively last season and Rodgers spent heavily in the summer to try to put that right", Shearer explained to the BBC.

"From what I saw against QPR, he has not managed it yet. In fact, they look worse at the back than they were last season, despite the new additions", he continued.

"One of the things I thought they were missing when they went so close to winning the title was a leader in defence – a really domineering centre-back. Well, they still have not got one of those."

Liverpool offloaded Denmark international centre-back Daniel Agger to Brondby this summer, while bringing in Dejan Lovren, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno to bolster their backline.

The Reds will hope to tighten up at the back on Wednesday evening when Real Madrid visit Anfield for a Champions League clash.
