Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed that midfielder Thiago Alcantara is set to undergo surgery on his knee ligament in Spain on Tuesday.

The former Barcelona man suffered his first ligament tear in March and was eventually forced to undergo an operation in May, preventing his participation in the World Cup.

The fresh blow though came just a week after his return to training with the first team. Alcantara went back to Spain on Friday to seek medical assistance from doctor Roman Cugat.

It was initially believed that the 22-year-old would follow the preferred path taken by the Bavarians by flying to the United States to be observed by knee specialist Dr Richard Steadmann in Vail.

Rummenigge though insists that the Spanish doctor is as good as his US counterpart and uses the same techniques as in the US. He also added that his team will have no problems with Alcantara receiving assistance in his own country.

"It was clear from the beginning, when he injured himself on Tuesday, that he would be operated on in Spain", Rummenigge was quoted as saying by ITV.

"The Spanish doctor is a very good doctor who, besides, uses the very same techniques that are used in Vail in America.

"He will be operated on tomorrow."
