Luke Shaw has conceded that he has not been up to scratch with his performances since joining Manchester United.

The England full-back joined the Red Devils from Southampton for a transfer fee of £27m this summer and is expected to be the club’s long-term left-back.

However, manager Louis van Gaal was unimpressed with the youngster’s fitness level during Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the US and an injury just before the start of the season delayed his debut for the club until last month.

And after three first team appearances for the club, Shaw admits that Manchester United are yet to see the best of him.

He added that playing for the 20-time English champions is never easy, but insisted that he is working hard to attain the level the club require him to be at and start performing week-in-week-out.

“I know I haven't been up to my full potential and I think maybe people can see that at the moment. I am trying hard and it's about getting used to everything.

"When you come to a club like this it's never easy for a young player like me. But I'll get myself started soon and put in good performances.

"I wouldn't say I've been horrendous but I know I can do much better. And I need to do better. I've come to Manchester United and I know what they need. I've been working hard and the performances will come."

Shaw made 67 appearances for Southampton before moving to Old Trafford this summer and has earned three international caps for England.
