Former Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray is playing it cool over being linked with the vacant managerial post at Birmingham City, but says he is ready to return to the game.

Blues sacked boss Lee Clark, along with his assistant Steve Watson, yesterday, following a poor start to the season and a weekend defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers.

Mowbray, who was sacked by Middlesbrough last year, has emerged as an early contender for the job.

And while he will not be drawn on taking over at Birmingham, he is ready to declare himself prepared to return to management.

"I'm ready to get back to work but you have to make sure it's the right job", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"If you choose the wrong one, you could be out of work again in six months or a year.

"I need to have a look at the situation", he added.

Birmingham currently sit fourth bottom of the Championship, with eleven points from 12 games.
