Former Manchester United first team coach Phil Neville believes that Liverpool will need a famous Champions League night at Anfield to overcome Real Madrid.

The Reds host the reigning European champions on Wednesday evening in the first of two group games against Carlo Ancelotti's men.

Liverpool are without Daniel Sturridge, who is still out through injury, and Neville feels the former Chelsea striker would have come in handy against Real Madrid.

"They would have needed Daniel Sturridge against Real Madrid. I think this is the glamour tie of the round", he told the BBC.

And Neville is of the opinion that Liverpool will need the famous Anfield roar behind them to make sure of getting a result against Real Madrid.

"I think Liverpool need one of those famous Anfield nights, where the crowd's up and it's almost like a 12th man, to get a result in this game", he added.

Liverpool have won one and lost one of their two Champions League group games so far.

Real Madrid have a 100 per cent record.
