Liverpool legend John Barnes feels Real Madrid are not as strong as last year, ahead of the Spaniards playing his old club in the Champions League tomorrow.

Los Blancos, who won the continental competition for a tenth time last season, lost their influential players Angel di Maria and Xabi Alonso to Manchester United and Bayern Munich respectively during the summer transfer window.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have already lost twice in La Liga this season and presently find themselves third in the league table with 18 points from eight games, four behind leaders Barcelona.

And Barnes, who believes Di Maria and Alonso are big loses for Real Madrid, however insisted that the Spanish club can still cause problems for Liverpool with the likes of James Rodriguez, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Real are third in La Liga, but they would expect to be higher than that. I don't think they are as strong as last year”, he was quoted as saying by Liverpool’s official site.
