Steven Gerrard admits that Real Madrid made two attempts to sign him from Liverpool and concedes he could well regret not having joined Los Blancos when he hangs up his boots.

The midfielder leads his Liverpool side against Real Madrid tomorrow evening in a crucial Champions League clash. But had Gerrard been willing to exit Anfield, he could have instead been lining up against his boyhood club.

The former England captain, who helped the Reds thrash the Spaniards 4-0 in 2009, concedes he could come to regret having turned down Real Madrid; however he feels he would have regretted leaving Liverpool more.

"I think it's very flattering to be linked to a huge club like Real Madrid", he explained to a press conference.

"I've had a couple of offers to go to Real Madrid, but I've resisted the temptation because of the connection I have to my hometown club in Liverpool.

"It may be something I regret later down the line for not going abroad, testing myself and having a change of scenery.

"But I would have had a bigger regret if I'd left Liverpool.

"I'm a big fan of Real Madrid, but Liverpool is my number one club", Gerrard concluded.
