Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher feels that Robin van Persie has not looked the part for Manchester United for the last year.

Van Persie shone when he first arrived at Old Trafford in 2012 under Sir Alex Ferguson, but struggled to maintain his killer instinct under David Moyes last term.

It was expected his game would hit its peak under countryman Louis van Gaal this season, with the Dutchman also having worked under the new Manchester United manager with the Netherlands national team.

But Carragher thinks Van Persie is still struggling.

Asked via Twitter what he thinks of Van Persie's form, Carragher replied: "Not looked right for over 12 months in a United shirt."

The former defender was also asked about who Manchester United should sign to bolster their defence, and answered: "[Mats] Hummels."

Van Gaal claimed the Red Devils played their best football of the season in a 2-2 draw away at West Brom last night – and Carragher agrees, to a point.

"Away from home, yes", he said.
