Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has backed Mario Balotelli to find his goalscoring form soon, ahead of his side’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid tonight.

The Italian striker, who joined the Reds from AC Milan in the summer, has been in poor form for his new employers.

Balotelli has thus far scored just once in nine appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, and was guilty of missing an open net during his side’s 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers at the weekend.

However, Rodgers feels it is “only a matter of time” before the 24-year-old starts banging in goals for Liverpool, owing to the forward’s hard work in training coupled with his ability to be in goalscoring positions.

"He's been fine. Of course, he was disappointed after the weekend”, Rodgers told the club’s official site.

“He's a goalscorer and wants to score goals, but the point I highlighted to him was that he was in the positions to miss.

"He was arriving in the areas and I think it's only a matter of time before he gets his goals.

"He's a good kid who is working hard. He's focused and getting himself out on the training field, which is important, and he's scored goals in big games.

"I'm sure he'll go into the game, if selected, looking forward to getting off the mark again and as long as he's in there with the possibilities to score, I have every confidence he can score.”

Balotelli, whose only goal in a Liverpool shirt came in the Merseyside club’s 2-1 win over Ludogorets Razgrad in their Champions League opener last month, won the continental tournament during his time at Inter Milan.
