West Ham first team coach Ian Hendon believes that the added strength and depth of the Hammers’ squad is keeping the players on their toes.

The Hammers were one of the busier clubs of the summer transfer window and bought the likes of Diafra Sakho, Enner Valencia, Alex Song and Aaron Cresswell to add strength and depth to their squad.

After briefly flirting with relegation last season, the Hammers have made a flying start to the new campaign on the back of their new signings and are fourth in the league table.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan said earlier this month this is the best West Ham squad he has seen since his arrival at the club and the first team coach agrees with him.

Hendon feels that the key to West Ham’s success this season is that the players are always under pressure to maintain their level of performance because of the depth of the club’s current squad.

"The added strength in depth from the new signings is important”, Hendon told the club’s official site.

“It's put the lads in the team under huge pressure to do well and keep their place. If they don't then there's players that can step straight in.

“To keep the players on their toes is always a good thing as that pressure gets the best out of each player. That can only be a good thing for the team and everybody involved in the club."

West Ham’s squad will be thoroughly test when they host Manchester City on Saturday at Upton Park.
