Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has explained that he was “proud” of his charges despite their 3-0 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League last night.

The Reds, who lost 1-0 against FC Basel in their previous Champions League outing, were trailing the reigning European champions 3-0 by the 41st minute, courtesy of a Cristiano Ronaldo strike and Karim Benzema’s brace.

Although Liverpool put up an improved performance after the break, Real Madrid held onto their three-goal advantage to consolidate their place at the top of Group B.

And Rodgers, who felt his side also started the game positively, was however not pleased with the way the Merseyside giants conceded the goals.

“I've got to give big credit to the players because in that first period of the game we were very good,” he told UEFA’s official site.

“We conceded poor goals against a top side but in the second half we were technically much better, kept possession a lot better and we were a threat.

“So overall, I thought it was a bit harsh for us to be 3-0 down at half-time.

“I'm also proud of my players because even though we lost 3-0, in the first period of the game and the second half you'd see lots of teams maybe crumble at 3-0 down.”

Liverpool, who will next face Hull City in the Premier League on Saturday, are currently third in Group B with three points from as many matches.
