Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits his side still have much work to do to return to the level they showed in defence last term.

Wenger's men have conceded eleven goals in eight Premier League games so far, a total substantially higher than any of the clubs in the top three; Arsenal are seventh.

The Frenchman took pride in Arsenal's defensive performances last season and is keen for his men to get back to that level in the current campaign.

"Last year we had 17 clean sheets and at the moment, we've only had one after eight games", he said via his club's site.

"We are not on the same level defensively."

And Wenger wants a team effort in a bid to start racking up the clean sheets once again, believing defending must start from the front, with all players being defensively minded.

"It's [about] improving by getting everybody to put a bit more effort into the defensive work. That starts not only at the back, but up front and in midfield by increasing the level of defensive activity through the team.

"We have had to reshuffle the defence and [the players] getting used to playing together helps as well."
