Returning Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick admits he does not know what new manager Louis van Gaal's plans for him are.

Carrick has not featured for Van Gaal this season due to an ankle problem which required surgery and kept him on the sidelines.

However, the 33-year-old is on the comeback trail and turned out for Manchester United's Under-21 side against West Ham on Friday evening.

He is now eyeing a first team comeback, but is unsure how Van Gaal will look to slot him into the side, especially given the summer signing of Dutchman Daley Blind, who has been operating in midfield for the Red Devils.

"I don't know [if I’ll be competing with Blind or playing alongside him]. You'll have to ask the manager", he told MUTV.

"I'm here to play. I don't know what the manager's plans are for me but I'm trying to be fit and available for the next game.

"I'll leave the selection headache up to him."

Van Gaal has admitted that Sunday's Premier League clash against Chelsea at Old Trafford has come too soon for Carrick, but the England midfielder will be looking to make his first team return as soon as possible.
