Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes that the performance matters more for Sunderland against Arsenal today than the result.

Gus Poyet's side were thrashed 8-0 away at Southampton last weekend, with question marks being raised over their character after they appeared to give up during the game.

Today they welcome Arsenal to the Stadium of Light as they look to recover, but start as underdogs against Arsene Wenger's Gunners.

For Schmeichel, given last weekend's debacle, the performance must take priority over the result for Sunderland.

"I don't think that the result actually matters that much for Sunderland", the former goalkeeper told BBC Radio 5 live.

"They have to deliver a performance that shows their commitment, because they seemed to have given up against Southampton at times", he added.

Sunderland travel to Crystal Palace after hosting Arsenal, while after the match against the Eagles come games against Everton and Leicester, all matches Poyet will hope his side can take points from.
