Marseille are working on extending Andre-Pierre Gignac's contract at the club, with an agreement that they will then sell the striker next summer.

Gignac's present deal at the Stade Velodrome expires next summer, having less than a year to run, and he has been linked with a number of clubs, including Premier League outfits Arsenal and Liverpool, who had been eyeing up a free transfer capture or nominal fee payment in January.

Marseille are unable to offer Gignac a contract on the same terms he is currently on, with their only proposal so far being €150,000 per month, down significantly from the €340,000 he earns at present.

However, talks are ongoing to reach a compromise as, according to French sports daily L'Equipe, Gignac does not want to quit Marseille without the club receiving a fee.

The most likely outcome will see the striker pen a new two-year deal, but with the understanding that he will be allowed to leave next summer for a fee of between €8m and €10m.

Marseille are still battling desperately to reduce costs and owner Margarita Louis-Dreyfus was forced to invest €20m in June to balance the books.

Gignac has been in fine form for Marseille this term, scoring ten goals in ten Ligue 1 games.
