Didier Drogba insists he does not need the Chelsea captain's armband to push the Blues forward on the pitch.

The veteran Ivorian striker scored Chelsea's first in their hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup this evening, hitting the back of the net in the 46th minute with a superb goal.

With John Terry on the bench, Drogba was handed the captain's armband by Jose Mourinho, something he continued to wear proudly even after removing his shirt at the end of the game at the New Meadow.

And Drogba insists he does not need an armband for him to help push the team forward and use his influence.

"Obviously John was on the bench, but I don't need this [armband] to support and to push", he told Sky Sports.

"We made this result as a team and because everyone wanted to win tonight", Drogba added.

Drogba, who returned for his second spell at Chelsea this summer, also played and scored against Manchester United in the Blues' 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.
