Remy Cabella admits that being benched at Newcastle United was a big blow to his pride.

Cabella joined Newcastle this summer after a scintillating season at Montpellier, where he scored 14 goals and provided seven assists.

But he had a poor start to his career in England and failed to make any kind of impact in a Newcastle team who were also going through a bad run.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew dropped Cabella to the bench against Swansea earlier this month and he only played a minute in Newcastle’s first win of the season against Leicester City on 18th October.

Benching the Frenchman seemed to have worked as he came on in the second half against Tottenham to engineer the Magpies' revival with his first assist for the club for Sammy Ameobi’s equaliser at White Hart Lane.

Cabella admits that being dropped to the bench hurt his professional pride, but he also understands Pardew’s reasons behind dropping him.

“No it makes sense”, the Frenchman told L’Equipe.

“The manager started me for the first two months but I failed to score or provide assists.

“Dropping me to the bench and not playing me at all [against Swansea] was a blow to my pride but I did not give up.

“I worked harder and he trusted me in the second half [against Spurs] and it was my first assist.

“It was good for my confidence.”

Cabella admits it is taking time for him to adjust to the pace of the Premier League and admits that the football in England is a new experience for him.

“England is like another world.

“This is a new challenge and a new league so inevitably I will need to make some adjustments.

“The pace and intensity [of the football] surprised me.”
