Returning Newcastle United injury absentee Ryan Taylor has hailed his side's 2-0 win over Manchester City in the League Cup at the Etihad Stadium this evening, with the midfielder making his comeback after two years out.

Both Newcastle and Manchester City made a raft of changes to their starting line-up, but the hosts appeared to still have a strong first eleven on display and started as firm favourites.

But Manuel Pellegrini's men were quickly shocked with young 18-year-old striker Rolando Aarons scoring for the visitors after just six minutes.

Manchester City pushed for a leveller, dominating possession and vastly outgunning the Magpies in terms of shots on goal.

Newcastle though grabbed another through Moussa Sissoko in the 75th minute, drilling home their advantage, despite Manchester City enjoying 70 per cent possession to the Magpies' 30.

"We came here on the back of two good wins, for myself personally that was a fairy tale", Taylor told Sky Sports.

"It's two years of hard graft just to get back playing football, but what a performance for the lads.

"It's worth it, all those times on my own in the gym from 7am until 4pm, it's all worth it when you see a performance like that.

"After that performance we'll take anyone [in the next round]."
