Alan Pardew believes he has regularly delivered Newcastle fans victories against big teams, after his Magpies side shocked Manchester City this evening, putting the holders out of the League Cup 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

The Newcastle manager made a whole host of changes to his side for the cup tie, but saw young Rolando Aarons put them ahead in the sixth minute, before Moussa Sissoko powered through the Manchester City defence to double the visitors' advantage in the 75th minute.

The Citizens dominated possession and shots on goal, but were lacklustre and the Magpies were good value for their win.

And Pardew, who has faced a barrage of criticism from Newcastle fans, feels he has often led the Magpies to shock wins, with Arsenal next in his sights.

"I do know what I'm doing. I think I've had most of the scalps as Newcastle manager, maybe except Arsenal and I look forward to playing them next", Pardew was quoted as saying by the BBC.

And he defended his team selection policy against Manchester City.

"I've been criticised for not concentrating on the cups, but I think I've been unlucky when they've come around.

"I had a culled group tonight and we had to protect ourselves a bit for Liverpool [at the weekend]. But now we can take confidence and belief into that game."

Newcastle have been drawn to face Tottenham in the League Cup quarter-finals.
