Daryl Janmaat has stressed that Newcastle United are looking at the League Cup as an opportunity to end their trophy drought.

Newcastle last won a trophy in 1969 when they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Since then they have won nothing of note except the Championship in 2010 to achieve promotion to the Premier League.

They will take on Manchester City at the Etihad later tonight and Janmaat feels that Newcastle should treat the League Cup seriously.

“Come on, it’s a trophy”, the Dutchman was quoted as saying by Soccer News.

“And Newcastle haven’t won a trophy since 1969.”

The full-back feels that winning a trophy would mean a lot for both the fans and the squad.

“It would be great if we can win the League Cup. It is something the fans would like and also the squad would experience the joy of winning a trophy.”

While they have won the FA Cup six times, Newcastle have never won the League Cup.
