Manchester City midfielder James Milner has stressed that anything can happen in the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Manchester City host their most bitter rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday and Milner is no stranger to the unpredictable nature of the derby.

The former Newcastle man stressed that it is impossible to predict a derby, but said that the players are always extra motivated for these fixtures.

“Any derby, anything can happen”, Milner told the club’s official site.

“In the Premier League we know to expect the unexpected but this is especially true for a derby given the passion of the fans.

“It’s always an important game, it’s one of the ones you look out for first when the fixture list is released, so hopefully we can get the right result.”

Milner also added that a win on Sunday is not only important for the players, but it also means a lot more for the fans, for whom the derby is the most important fixture of the season.

“It’s one you always want to win as we know it’s long time before we’ll play them again.

“Of course we take into account that fans want the bragging rights and people have to go into work on the next day, so we don’t want to put them in an awkward position.”

The Citizens will be looking to close the gap on league leaders Chelsea and the Red Devils will continue to try finding their way back into the top echelons of English football.

Manchester City lost the first league meeting between the two sides at Hyde Road on 3rd November 1894.
