Manchester United are planning a double raid on Bundesliga giants Schalke for the signatures of two Arsenal targets, Benedikt Howedes and Julian Draxler, in January.

With inconsistent performances from the Manchester United defence, coupled with injuries to key defenders, Louis van Gaal is keen to strengthen his side’s backline in January.

The Dutchman is looking for a commanding defender who can lead Manchester United's backline and is keeping a close eye on Howedes as a result.

The former Bayern Munich manager is also tracking the progress of Draxler and is believed to be an admirer of the young schemer.

Manchester United scouts have been spotted at the Veltins Arena in the last few games, presumably running the rule over the Schalke duo, who were both linked with Arsenal over the summer.

The odds are that Van Gaal is now planning a double swoop for Howedes and Draxler in January, according to German magazine SportBild.

The Dutchman wants Howedes to lead the Manchester United defence and the addition of Draxler would add even more attacking flair to a team that are already brimming with creative players.

But Schalke are expected to provide stiff resistance and will not be willing to part with their captain and one of their best young talents without hard negotiations involving huge transfer fees.
