Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers feels that his side could quickly find themselves in a strong position in the Premier League if they can go on a run of wins.

Rodgers' side have picked up 14 points from nine games so far, nine fewer than league leaders Chelsea and five fewer than second-placed Southampton.

Liverpool have also yet to play Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United.

But Rodgers believes the Premier League is so tight at present that if his side can put together a run of wins, they can quickly catapult themselves up from their current placing of seventh.

"If you can get a run of victories, that can move you forward", the Liverpool manager explained at a press conference, pointing to the weekend's opponents Newcastle as a good example.

"I think the division as a whole is tight. If you can get a sequence of results and get momentum, that's very important. Where they're at now, on the back of three wins, they have got nice momentum."

However, Rodgers believes Liverpool are heading into their weekend meeting with Newcastle with their own momentum, after beating Swansea City in the League Cup in midweek.

"It was an excellent result for us and we'll look to take that confidence into the weekend", he remarked.
