Aston Villa midfielder Tom Cleverley has urged his side to return to winning ways when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League fixture on Sunday.

The Villains have lost their last five league outings and currently find themselves 15th in the standings with just 10 points from nine games.

And Cleverley, who joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United in the summer, admitted that his present employers are currently enduring a challenging period.

However, the England international insisted that his side’s confidence is not down despite their poor string of results and he believes that Aston Villa are capable of claiming a positive result against Spurs at Villa Park.

"It's been a challenging period for us. We've had some tough fixtures and we've not been 100% up to standard in a couple of games”, Cleverley explained to the club’s official site.

"The determination and aim is to come out fighting against Tottenham and everyone pulling together as a team to get a result.

"I don't think our confidence has been knocked. We know what we we're capable of and we just need to perform and work hard in training and do the business on Sunday."

Cleverley has thus far made six Premier League appearances for Aston Villa, but is yet to find the back of the net or provide an assist for Paul Lambert’s side.
