Newcastle United are firmly set on beating Liverpool at the weekend, manager Alan Pardew has explained.

The Magpies shocked Manchester City last night, dumping the holders out of the League Cup by winning 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, with two teenagers leading the line up front.

The win has added to the momentum Newcastle have begun to build, with Tottenham Hotspur beaten at White Hart Lane last weekend.

Next up for Pardew's side to tackle is Liverpool, who visit St. James' Park on Saturday in a Premier League clash – and the former West Ham manager wants three points.

"We want to improve on our league position by beating Liverpool. It's always a great fixture and is set up to be a cracking game", Pardew explained to a press conference this afternoon.

He also feels the Magpies are now pleasing the club's fans.

"We are winning games again and that's what the fans want to see. We have got a group who can excite the fans."

Last term Newcastle held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at St. James' Park, before succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at Anfield.
