Neil Redfearn has vowed to employ a performance-based selection policy at Leeds United, ahead of his official confirmation as boss.

The club's academy chief is stepping up to take the senior job on a permanent basis following the sacking of Slovenian Darko Milanic, who lasted just 32 days in the post.

Questions were raised over team selection in Milanic's time in charge, with English striking pair Billy Sharp and Steve Morison chomping at the bit to be involved.

Redfearn, who had a brief spell in charge as caretaker before Milanic arrived, insists he will only pick players based on their performances and will not stick with a team that are failing to earn results.

"If players are playing well and they give you something different and it fits in with what you're doing, then they'll get in. But players have got to play well, they've got to compete and they've got to play well to keep the position and keep the shirt", the manager explained to LUTV.

"That's always been the case in football and that's never ever going to change."

Indeed, for Redfearn, every player in the Leeds squad has an equal chance of featuring regularly if they take their chances.

"I want the players to compete for places. I want them to know that there is a chance, that they can get in if they do play well.

"And the ones that play well have got to know that they stay in if they play well and they're winning. We've got to win football matches. We've got to be a side that wins games and they've got to understand that", he added.

Redfearn takes his Leeds side to Wales for a clash against Cardiff City tomorrow.
