Neil Redfearn has been warned that his work with the academy at Leeds United will quickly count for nothing if he fails as boss of the senior side.

Following the sacking of Darko Milanic, Redfearn is being promoted from his academy duties to take the senior side post full-time, having had a temporary spell earlier this season.

Expectations are high given Redfearn's caretaker spell yielded 10 points from 12, while he has built a reputation helping to develop Leeds' academy and bring through young talents.

But Gray feels the only thing that matters at any football club is a winning first team, something which ensures Redfearn will be under pressure.

"He came in before and people were surprised he didn't get the job on a permanent basis then. The president said he wanted him at the academy, but he's with the first team now", Gray told LUTV.

"It's alright talking about academies, but there's only one team that counts at a football club and that's the first team. The first team goes well, everything else is forgotten.

"You can still produce players through the academy, but the academy's not going to keep the club afloat in terms of being successful", the club legend concluded.
