Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has insisted that the Manchester derby is not a match between him and Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.

The champions welcome their most hated rivals, Manchester United, to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday for the first Manchester derby of the season.

It is also Pellegrini’s first opportunity to pit his wits against Manchester United manager Van Gaal.

But the Chilean refuses to see the game in that way and insisted that the players on both sides of the Manchester divide matter more than the managers.

“On Sunday it will be City v United and last year was the same”, Pellegrini said in a press conference.

“It was not me versus [David] Moyes and this time it’s not me versus Van Gaal."

Pellegrini also understands how much a win against Manchester United means for the Manchester City supporters.

“For supporters it’s a special game and we know that. We know what it means to win against Manchester United."

Despite the Red Devils being the more successful of the two clubs, it was the Citizens who were the first side from Manchester to win a trophy in the form of the FA Cup in 1904.
